Social Justice Education

The importance of preparing educational researchers and practitioners committed to seeking equity in education and possessing the ability to act as change agents in the field is only becoming increasingly relevant within today’s dynamic social, political, and educational landscape. Accordingly, the GSE has declared Diversity, Equity, and Social Justice to be a critical research area within the school’s strategic plan, and has made meeting the needs of diverse learners and addressing the equity and adequacy of financial, human, and social resources for PK-12 and higher education institutions an integral component to all program curricula.

Through completion of any of the 60+ programs of study offered by the GSE, students will be challenged to understand the influence social class, ethnicity, language, race, gender, sexual identity, religion, and other forms of human diversity have on educational opportunity and student success. With guidance from expert faculty, they can expect to investigate emotive topics including the opportunity gap, school to prison pipeline, public school finance, and globalization, as well as to explore theoretical considerations including inequality, human and civil rights, and ethics, among others.
