Non-degree Graduate Certificate in Gifted Education

    Program Overview

    The 15-credit, non-degree graduate certificate in Gifted Education offered at the GSE is designed to help New Jersey educators, districts, and parents meet the challenges of educating gifted learners. This special program draws on input from district superintendents, teachers, parents, the Educational Information and Resource Center, and the statewide advocates, including the New Jersey Association for Gifted Children. The curriculum, developed in alignment with state and national standards, addresses the social and emotional development of the gifted child, curriculum design and implementation, pedagogy, instructional strategies, and the development and administration of a gifted education program. The program  is available to students enrolled in master’s and doctoral programs at Rutgers University, and is open to all with a bachelor’s degree.

    After completing all of the required courses in the program, students will receive official documentation of their completion, endorsed by the Rutgers University Graduate School of Education. This program does not include coursework leading to a New Jersey school personnel license.

  • What You’ll Learn

    Students enrolled in the Gifted Education certificate program at the GSE will begin in the program with an overview of the field and an introduction to the cognitive and psychosocial needs and development of gifted individuals over their lifetime. Emphasis will be placed on the affective approaches to use in the classroom, as well as more formalized programs and services in guidance and counseling deemed essential for their talent development.  Later courses in the program will explore the basic frameworks for developing curriculum for gifted learners K-12, including a design model that engages participants in articulating goals, outcomes, task and product demands, strategies, and assessments for gifted learners, based on their individual characteristics and needs. Lastly, students will learn to design and develop research-based programs and services specifically for the gifted. The coursework will focus on the development of systems necessary to start gifted programs and keep them operating over time in school contexts including an identification system, curriculum and instructional management systems, guidance and counseling, and an assessment and evaluation system.

  • Program Requirements

    15 Graduate Course Credits

    • 3 Credits – Introduction to Gifted Education or The Gifted Child
    • 3 Credits – The Social and Emotional Needs of Gifted Learners or The Social and Emotional Development of Gifted Children
    • 3 Credits – Curriculum and Instruction for the Gifted
    • 3 Credits – Gifted Program Development
    • 3 Credits – Clinical Placement and Practicum 

    Students are expected to maintain a “B” or better average as a non-degree student. Accepted students will have 5 years to complete the program. After completing all of the required courses in the program, students should contact the Office of Academic Services at the GSE. Students will receive official documentation of their completion, endorsed by the Rutgers University Graduate School of Education.

  • Careers and Outcomes

    Earning a graduate certificate at the GSE allows candidates to advance their understanding of, and gain practical skills pertaining to, gifted education and the core cognitive characteristics of gifted learners. Candidates from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply, as earning a certificate can help students enter into a new specialization they’ve yet to explore, or advance or stay competitive in a space they already have knowledge in. The program offers a comprehensive look at the latest tools and research in the field and can lead to potential career benefits including advancement, role flexibility, or leadership responsibility.

    • Personal Statement: approximately 1-page in length that describes why the program is relevant to the applicant’s interests for career goals
    • 1 Letter of Recommendation
    • Official Undergraduate Transcripts

    Applicants are responsible for reviewing and confirming that they meet all requirements before the application is submitted. Rutgers Graduate School of Education will not refund the application fee if an applicant is not accepted.

    Current Rutgers University Students:

    All applicants who are currently enrolled in a program at Rutgers University and wish to begin the certificate program while continuing their current program should contact the GSE Office of Student and Academic Services (OSAS) at academic.services@gse.rutgers.edu.

    Non-Rutgers University Students:
