Two Pathways to Teacher Prep and Certification

The Five-Year Path

Our five-year path is for Rutgers undergraduates who want to earn a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in – you guessed it—five years. Generally speaking, only one year of the program is at the graduate tuition rate,* making it one of the most cost- and time-efficient ways to pursue initial teacher licensure. Plus, you’ll earn a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, and begin teaching at a higher rate of pay.

*Special circumstances may apply; check with your counselor or our admissions office for up to date fees.

Five-Year FAQs

  • What do I need to major in?

The major is based on the specific five-year program in your area of interest. For more info, check out the downloadable pages on our website or speak with an academic counselor.

Introduction to Education with the corresponding lab 05:300:200/201, as well as Educational Psychology 05:300:306. Dance Education, Special/Elementary Education, and Math Education require some additional courses.

  • What do I need to apply?

We require three letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and a minimum GPA of 2.75.* An entrance exam is also necessary. View the downloadable pages on our website or speak with an academic counselor for more information.

  • When should I apply?

Students typically apply to the five-year program in the spring of their junior year, but seniors can apply too. Transfer students should speak with a GSE academic counselor for guidance.

The Post-Baccalaureate Path

Our “Post-Bacc” path is for students who have already received their bachelor’s degree in a field unrelated to education. The program typically takes two years, and as with the 5-year pathway, upon graduating a person earns an Ed.M. (Master’s of Education) and a recommendation to be awarded a certificate to teach in a public school in New Jersey. Regardless of the path to their Ed.M., students can choose from licensure areas such as English education, dance education, mathematics education, elementary education, social studies education, science education, foreign language, and English as a Second Language education.

Post-Bacc FAQs

  • How long does it take/can I complete it in a quicker timeframe?

It is two years, full-time. A part-time option is available, but will take longer than two years. For details, consult a GSE academic counselor.

  • Where is the program located?

Courses are held in person on the New Brunswick Campus. Clinical placements take place in New Jersey Public Schools in and around New Brunswick. Special arrangements for clinical placements can be made if you live more than an hour away from campus.
