Rutgers Center for Literacy Development: Doug Fisher “Reading Reimagined: Weaving Word Recognition and Language Comprehension for Effective Literacy Instruction (The Science of Reading)”

9:30 am - 2:00 pm
Busch Student Center

What does it take to ensure that the vast majority of children learn to read? What do we know, for sure, that must be included in reading instruction? If these are the question that keep you awake at night, this session is for you. We’ll explore early literacy learning and foundational skills for readers. But we will also explore verbal reasoning and the theory of mind that is required to produce amazing readers. The session will focus on two major strands of reading development recognized in the Science of Reading: Word recognition and language comprehension. Weaving these together is critical if we are going to effectively answer the daunting questions about teaching reading well.
