Kevin L. Clay presents an eye-opening account of his experience with Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) as an Upward Bound educator. Grounded in Paulo Freire’s tradition of critical pedagogy\, YPAR has been championed by community-based educators and scholars in the United States as an approach for supporting critical consciousness development and social change with working-class Black and Latino youth. Clay\, however\, questions whether YPAR can effectively prepare youths to subvert the systems reproducing their material conditions under neoliberal capitalism. Exposing the political and pedagogical limits of YPAR’s progressive education model\, he reveals how omnipresent neoliberalism undermines youths’ radical potential when political education is not prioritized in youth activism. \nI Guess This Is Activism? engages Black radical thinkers\, including Ella Baker and Fred Hampton\, to reveal the faulty assumptions implicit in YPAR’s program. Looking deeply into how he and his students navigated questions of community problems and social change at the twilight of the Obama presidency\, Clay demonstrates how\, in the absence of political education on the structures of race\, class\, and capitalism\, youth activism is always eclipsed by the common sense of the free market. \nAs working-class Black and Latino youth inherit a society deeply shaped by neoliberal dogma\, I Guess This Is Activism? delivers a much-needed reexamination of YPAR and visions for the future of youth activist education. \nEvent Speakers & Participants \nAUTHOR: Dr. Kevin L. SUMMARY:Dissertation Proposal Announcement Ed.D. Program: Cesar Rainho "Do Teacher Evaluations Matter? A Quantitative Analysis of the Danielson Framework for  Teaching and Student Achievement"
DESCRIPTION:High-quality teachers have been shown to increase student success; however\, teacher quality varies widely. Teacher evaluation systems are designed to monitor and promote teacher quality and provide meaningful measures of teacher performance. However\, questions remain regarding the accuracy and validity of teacher evaluations and the extent to which evaluation ratings are associated with student achievement. \nThis quantitative study will examine the relationship between teacher evaluation scores from a common teacher evaluation system\, the Danielson Framework for Teaching\n(DFFT)\, and student achievement. Specifically\, this study examines Domains II and III of the 2022 Danielson Framework for Teaching (DFFT) and student achievement in grades 9–12 English Language Arts (ELA) at Franklin High School. The study will also examine whether relationships between teacher evaluation scores and student achievement differ between ratings generated using the 2011 and 2022 versions of the DFFT. Student achievement will be measured using benchmark assessments and standardized NJSLA results. Descriptive statistics will be used to examine the distributions of teacher evaluation and student achievement scores and differences across selected demographic and grade-level groups. \nPearson correlations will be conducted to determine the strength and direction of relationships between components of Domains II and III and student achievement. Multiple regression analyses will then examine the extent to which teacher evaluation scores predict performance on benchmark and standardized assessments. Additional regression analyses will assess whether the relationship between evaluation ratings and student achievement differs between the 2011 and 2022 DFFT rubrics. \nFindings from this study may contribute to understanding the validity and utility of teacher evaluation data\, particularly when evaluation results are used to inform professional growth and high-stakes personnel decisions. The study may also provide insight into whether revisions incorporated into the 2022 DFFT produce evaluation ratings that more meaningfully reflect instructional effectiveness and address concerns regarding equity and potential bias in teacher evaluation. \nTo attend this event virtually and for more information\, please contact academic.services@gse.rutgers.edu. Join us remotely via Zoom! \n\nIn this presentation\, Dr. Luis Morales-Navarro proposes a five-step model after expert algorithm audits that\, when incorporated into learning activities\, can support young people in auditing algorithms. He will share several examples of audits conducted by teenagers in which they uncovered inequitable behaviors in the generative model that powers TikTok filters and ChatGPT-generated college and career advice. He will also highlight how teachers\, with the advice of teenagers\, played a key role in the design of AI auditing lessons. Finally\, he will discuss opportunities to build on longstanding science education ideas and practices in the design of AI learning activities and to involve teachers and learners in the design of AI literacy activities. \n\nBio:\nLuis Morales-Navarro is a postdoctoral researcher at Aarhus University in Denmark. His research brings together perspectives from human–computer interaction and the learning sciences to study how youth can participate in the design and evaluation of AI/ML systems. Previously\, he researched and designed tools and environments for learning computing at New York University\, the Studio for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie Mellon University\, the Processing Foundation\, Fundación Omar Dengo\, and Apple’s Human Centered Machine Intelligence group.
