Rutgers at AERA 2019

Members of the Rutgers University community, including faculty and graduate students of the Graduate School of Education, will be participating in the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Annual Meeting from Friday, April 5th through Tuesday, April 9th in Toronto, Canada. The theme this year is “Leveraging Education Research in a “Post-Truth” Era: Multimodal Narratives to Democratize Evidence” which calls us to push back against the post-truth paradigm by demonstrating, with all the skill and energy we can muster, the value of our inquiry and the knowledge we generate—be it in the form of linear equations; deep, rich ethnographies; or Youth Participatory Action Research.

Sixty-three representatives from Rutgers University will take part in this year’s Annual Meeting, with twenty-eight coming from the GSE. GSE representatives will be participating in a total of 67 programs over the course of five days. This conference will allow for the research conducted by members of our community to not only be read, but shared and discussed to contribute to the goal of this year’s Annual Meeting, which is to consider the importance of education research.

In line with the AERA theme, GSE Professor Beth Rubin will present a paper entitled, “Homelessness, Stealing, Animal Rights, Bullying: Youth Participatory Action Research Challenges Assumptions About the Civic Capacities of Children” during the Saturday afternoon sessions. William S. Barnett, Board of Governors professor and Director of the National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER), will be presenting his paper “Long-Term Effects of Early Care and Education on Cognitive Development: Public Preschool Programs and Impacts on Academic Achievement,” which touches on just one of the many aspects of assessing education research.

GSE associate professor Melinda Mangin will chair the “Transgender and Gender-Expansive Youth: Supporting and Affirming Queer Identities” speaker session. She is also presenting during the “Critical Teacher Leadership: How Teachers Advocate for Transgender Students” session and is an officer of the “Queer Studies SIG Business Meeting” session taking place.

Having so many faculty and graduate students participate in the conference is an immense honor for the GSE. A complete list of GSE as well as Rutgers participation is below.

The annual AERA reception hosted by the GSE as well as the Rowan College of Education will be taking place on April 6th from 7:00-9:00PM at the Delta Toronto. For more information on AERA’s Annual Meeting, please visit the AERA website.
