Dissertation Proposal Announcement Ed.D. Program: John Adams “Examine Whether Diversity and Equity Exist in the Curricula Decision-Making Process in K-12 School Districts: A Mixed-Method Investigation on the Procurement of Subject-Based Curriculums”
This research examines the influence of curriculum selection processes on equity, inclusivity, and academic achievement in urban school districts. With a focus on addressing systemic barriers, the study investigates how district leaders balance cost, quality, and inclusivity in selecting curricula that meet the diverse needs of students. Grounded in Achievement Gap Theory, Constructivist Learning Theory, Equity Frameworks in Education, and Change and Organization Theory, the research explores how culturally responsive and equity-driven curricula can reduce achievement gaps and foster meaningful learning experiences. The study also highlights the role of stakeholder involvement, professional development, and policy mandates in shaping curriculum decisions.
The research emphasizes the problem of widening achievement gaps and systemic inequities in underfunded districts. It identifies the need for curricula that reflect diverse cultural perspectives and promote engagement and critical thinking among marginalized student populations. A comprehensive literature review frames the study within the context of equity, culturally responsive pedagogy, stakeholder collaboration, data-driven decision-making, and the challenges posed by funding disparities. Key insights underscore the importance of inclusive curriculum selection processes in creating equitable learning opportunities.
This study adopts a multi-site exploratory case study approach to investigate how school districts select subject-based curricula emphasizing diversity, equity, and inclusivity. Data collection combines qualitative and quantitative methods, including 37 semi-structured interviews with curriculum decision-makers, New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA) data analysis, and a 43-item questionnaire designed to address key research questions. These research questions explore decision-making processes, strategies for balancing cost-effectiveness with quality and inclusivity, the role of performance metrics and community demographics, stakeholder involvement, and the impact of equity-focused curricula on closing achievement gaps.
This research contributes to the discourse on educational equity by providing actionable insights for policymakers, educators, and administrators seeking to reform curriculum practices. The study aims to improve academic outcomes and foster an inclusive educational environment for all students by addressing systemic inequities and promoting culturally responsive teaching.
