The Ed.M. program with (K-12) teacher certification in English education is designed for individuals who possess a bachelor’s degree in English or a related field and who wish to pursue certification and a master’s degree in education at the same time. Certificates are recommended only in conjunction with the completion of the requirements for the Ed.M. degree.

The program has three major goals:

  • to encourage students to articulate and critique their vision of the teaching of English;
  • to help students develop a repertoire of instructional strategies that will help them enact that vision in the classroom; and
  • to provide field experiences that will allow students to bring the research and theory they have studied into practice.

Applications can be completed online. Applications are due by February 1 for the fall term. Students are admitted only once a year to the postbaccalaureate program.

Program Requirements

In order to earn the master's degree, individuals must successfully complete the required course sequence, provide proof of satisfaction of the general education requirements and liberal arts credits, and pass the portfolio and end-of-program writing requirement.

Accepted students will have 5 years to complete the program, from the beginning of any course work to be counted toward the program.

A complete listing of degree requirements are available for download or at the Office of Student and Academic Services.
