Alumna Named Champion of Change by the White House

On February 26th, 2014, President Obama honored Rutgers Graduate School of Education (GSE) alumna, Dr. Kimberly Scott (Ed.D. ‘99), for her achievements with CompuGirls: A Culturally Relevant Technology Program for Girls.  She was one of 10 African Americans recognized as “Champions of Change” for their efforts empowering and inspiring local members of their communities. Dr. Scott works as an associate professor at Arizona State University in Women and Gender Studies and also co-leads the national STEM For All initiative, under President Obama’s Educate to Innovate campaign.

Dr. Scott’s CompuGirls, founded in 2007, enables girls (grades 8-12) the opportunity to pursue interests in the IT and STEM fields. The girls are given the chance to work with advanced digital media tools, enhance their technological and analytical skills, and work in a fun learning environment that fosters self-esteem and confidence.
