Students Attend United Nations Youth Assembly
This August, a delegation of Rutgers University students and alumni attended the 12th Annual United Nations Youth Assembly at the United Nations Head Quarters in New York City.
More than 30 Rutgers students representing many different schools and programs joined delegates from around the world. Graduate School of Education (GSE) delegates included Melissa Roginski (Language Education and Urban Teaching Fellow), Wilfredo Benitez (Social Studies Education and Urban Teaching Fellow), and Jennifer Cho (Biology Education 2013 Graduate).
The theme of this year’s assembly was “On the Road to Actions: Moving Beyond the Millennium Development Goals, Post 2015.”Throughout the program, students had an opportunity to hear about various initiatives from around the world designed to accomplish the 8 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015. The 8 MDGs are
1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2. Achieve universal primary education
3. Promote gender equality and empower women
4. Reduce child mortality
5. Improve maternal health
6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
7. Ensure environmental sustainability
8. Global partnership for development
The three-day assembly included workshops, round table discussions, skill building exercises, and networking opportunities for personal advancement. Participants were also able to hear from renowned speakers.
