In this presentation, Dr. Luis Morales-Navarro proposes a five-step model after expert algorithm audits that, when incorporated into learning activities, can support young people in auditing algorithms. He will share several examples of audits conducted by teenagers in which they uncovered inequitable behaviors in the generative model that powers TikTok filters and ChatGPT-generated college and career advice. He will also highlight how teachers, with the advice of teenagers, played a key role in the design of AI auditing lessons. Finally, he will discuss opportunities to build on longstanding science education ideas and practices in the design of AI learning activities and to involve teachers and learners in the design of AI literacy activities.
Bio:
Luis Morales-Navarro is a postdoctoral researcher at Aarhus University in Denmark. His research brings together perspectives from human–computer interaction and the learning sciences to study how youth can participate in the design and evaluation of AI/ML systems. Previously, he researched and designed tools and environments for learning computing at New York University, the Studio for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie Mellon University, the Processing Foundation, Fundación Omar Dengo, and Apple’s Human Centered Machine Intelligence group. He was a Penn AI Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, where he completed his Ph.D.
