Dissertation Defense Announcement Ed.D. Program: Lucille Leung “Learning Beyond the Bars: Outcomes and Experiences in a Post-release College Program”

10:00 am - 11:30 am

Although post-secondary correctional education (PSCE) programs have been found to have positive effects on reducing recidivism, improving employment outcomes, and being cost effective (Davis et al., 2013; Erisman & Contardo, 2005; Taylor, 1992), most studies have been unable to separate the effects of college-level education from receiving a high school diploma/GED, or vocational training in prison, and few studies have focused on college programs that exist outside of prisons for previously incarcerated students post-release. This study addresses this gap through an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design to provide a comprehensive analysis of a post-release college program. Through archival quantitative data and participant interviews, this study examined the outcomes students from the program have relating to deterrence from crime, employment, and academic standing, alongside students’ experiences and perceptions of the significance of the program. Together, the study aimed to have a thorough perspective of the program’s outcomes and dive beyond just recidivism rates and postsecondary education within prisons into the student experience and outcomes post-release.

Findings show that participants not only achieved substantially lower recidivism than state benchmarks, but strong academic outcomes and high rates of employment after degree completion. Qualitative results explain these outcomes by highlighting the importance of community, supportive social networks, and institutional guidance in fostering self-efficacy and a renewed sense of purpose during reentry despite the many barriers faced. Overall, the study demonstrates that a post-release college program can be transformative in both measurable success and meaningful personal growth.
