Teacher Education Program Snapshot
For Undergraduates: The “Five-Year” Program
Rutgers GSE offers a range of five-year teacher preparation programs. Beginning as a Rutgers undergraduate, foundational coursework can be undertaken in your first, sophomore, and junior years. You’ll transition into your Graduate studies in the summer/fall of your senior year, making this program a swift and cost-effective pathway to your teaching career. This program is designed to prepare students to become a certified teacher in New Jersey Public Schools.

This program is customizable to match your interests. The route and schedule structure you select will determine your cost. To assist in your decision-making, you can consider the following estimates:
- Average Time to Degree: Typically, students spend four years to earn their bachelor’s degree, begin the GSE program in their fourth year while finishing up their bachelor’s degree requirements, and then take one additional year to earn their master’s degree and teaching license(s).
- Average Cost: Four years of undergraduate tuition and fees plus one year of graduate tuition of approximately $23,300 (plus fees).
- Format: The program meets on campus in New Brunswick with clinical placements in New Jersey public schools located mostly in Middlesex and Somerset Counties, but there are options throughout the state.
Graduates of this program are prepared to succeed as educators in New Jersey public schools.
For Bachelor-Degree Holders: The “Post-Bacc” Program
Rutgers GSE offers 10+ specialized areas of study leading to a Master of Education (Ed.M.) degree. If you hold an unrelated bachelor’s degree, this pathway is for you. Through our Post-Baccalaureate (“post-bacc”) program, students gain real-world experience. The fusion of theory and hands-on learning, guided by esteemed faculty and GSE’s dedication to equity and social justice, equips graduates with specialized proficiencies that distinguish them from their peers and fellow job seekers.
