Qayyum Ogunsanya

Qayyum Ogunsanya is a second-year Ph.D. student at Rutgers University focusing on Black Studies in Education. His research sits at the intersection of education, racial capitalism, and empire within the geography of Black New Jersey. By historicizing U.S. schools as internal colonial impositions and ingrained sites of capitalist stratification, Ogunsanya is exploring how modern neoliberal and progressive educational reforms have reassociated the rallying cry of “education for liberation” with “education for social mobility”—ideologically, discursively, and materially capturing the possibilities of racial freedom necessary in New Jersey and the U.S. settler-empire.
