Research Interests
The intersection(s) of the cultural politics of Black education, the cultural, political, developmental effects of carceral progressivism on youth activism and radical identities, and the decolonial mattering of African Diasporic lives.
Research Statement
Torrence G. Brown-Smith is a PhD student interested in exploring the ways antiBlack logics of settler-colonialism and neoliberalism in U.S. schools operate as a structuring, saturating, and obscuring social force that impacts knowledge production, value association, school curriculum, sociopolitical development, personhood, economic and educational investment & outcomes, and radical imaginations, for Black youth and communities.
