Profile: Nydia Flores (Ferrán)

Associate Professor GSE Department of Learning and Teaching & the School of Arts and Sciences, Department of Spanish and Portuguese

My line of inquiry explores two interrelated avenues: Sociolinguistics and Pragmatics. I have a joint appointment between the Graduate School of Education (Language Education) and the School of Arts and Sciences (Spanish & Portuguese). With regard to traditional sociolinguistics, I employ a variationist lens to examine linguistic features that alternate in Spanish among U.S. Spanish speakers (see publications for details). I also examine the use of mitigation using a pragmatic perspective among native speakers, learners, and bilinguals in the U.S. (see publications for details).
