Brian Dashew, Ed.D., is an Assistant Professor of Practice for Adult and Continuing Education. He teaches coursework in adult learning theory and applied research (needs assessment, program evaluation) for adult education programs.
Dashew’s research focuses on online course discussion forums and how adult learners bring their own experience to the learning setting. Through his work and research, Dr. Dashew addresses the needs of an often over-looked student population and thinks about the ways in which we can re-design tools and activities that are going to help adult learners make the most of their educational experiences. In addition to this work, another focus of Dashew’s work has become a technique called “Imagine Dialogue,” an arts-based approach to transformative learning, for which he and his collaborators won the Jack Mezirow Living Theory for Transformative Learning Award in 2019.
Professionally, Dashew was Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs at Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies. At Columbia, Dashew was responsible for curricular planning and program development. While managing curriculum and instruction, Dashew oversaw the work of the school’s instructional design, educational technology, media development, and technology support functions. Previously, Dashew was instructional designer responsible for faculty development at Marist College and learning designer for certificate courses at eCornell.
This concentration stems from his distinct background and interest in Instructional Design which continued throughout his education. Dashew holds an Ed.D. in Adult Learning and Leadership at Teachers College. He also has an M.S.Ed. in Instructional Systems Technology from Indiana University and a B.S. in Organizational Communication, Learning, and Design from Ithaca College.
