South Africa Initiative and Rutgers Future Scholars Attend Global Leadership Summit

This week participants of the Rutgers University Graduate School of Education’s 13th Annual South Africa Initiative Study Tour will rub shoulders with more than 140 international delegates from universities in Asia, the United States, Europe, and Africa at the University of the Free State’s second Global Leadership Summit. Rutgers has also sent six Rutgers undergraduate student emerging leaders from the Rutgers Future Scholars program to participate in the Summit.

The Global Leadership Summit is taking place in South Africa on the Bloemfontein and Qwaqwa Campuses of the University of The Free State between July 5 and July 17, 2015. The 2015 Summit promises panel discussions and workshops that will focus on gender issues, citizenship and leadership, race relations and interfaith leadership and aims to build a forum for an exchange ideas and international experiences while addressing issues around diversity, social justice, race, racism, racial integration and racial reconciliation in higher education. The leadership summit represents just a portion of the activities on the itinerary of for the 2015 South Africa Initiative participants.  As part of this year’s cultural-immersion tour the group will visit the South African National Zoological Gardens, the Voortrekker Monument, the University of Pretoria, the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, the Apartheid Museum, Teboho Trust, the Hector Pieterson Museum, Robben Island, the District 6 Museum, the University of Capetown, and Kalksteinfontein Township.  Additional stories on the trip will be available in the coming weeks.  Please check back soon.
