The Reading Specialist acts as a resource person to promote student and teacher growth in learning and teaching reading and as a reading instructor for students in need of acceleration, correction, or remediation. The Reading Specialist works collaboratively with teachers to implement a quality literacy program that is research-based and differentiated for student needs. This position supports teachers by modeling instructional strategies and lessons, developing and modifying lesson plans, supporting all students in a variety of ways to improve their reading, and expanding teacher and parent understanding of current literacy research and knowledge.

• Assists the classroom teacher in meeting the reading and literacy goals of all students.
• Screens and assesses students to establish proper reading level placement and develops an instructional plan that will be implemented during small group and individual instruction.
•Assists classroom teachers in selection of students needing special and or individualized reading instruction.
• Provides individual and small group instruction for identified students.
• Gives demonstrations lessons in the teaching of reading as requested or required.
• Assists in the establishment and development of school and district reading curriculum.

Minimum Education/Experience: Master’s Degree required. Must have two (2) completed years of teaching as a Reading Teacher.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: A valid New Jersey Teacher Certification and New Jersey Reading Specialist Certification required. Must be experienced with Common Core State Standards. Must have experience with balanced literacy program, preferably The Wilson Reading System or The Orton Gillingham Method. Demonstrated knowledge with interpreting and administering literacy assessments. Demonstrated ability to analyze and use data to design, modify, and evaluate literacy curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Must have experience in teaching and working with children with exceptional needs. Must undergo criminal history background check at employee’s expense, as required by NJ State Law.
