Description

The Ed.M. program with (K-12) teacher certification in foreign language education and English as a second language (ESL) is designed for individuals who possess a bachelor’s degree and who wish to pursue certification and a master’s degree in education at the same time. Certificates are recommended only in conjunction with the completion of the requirements for the Ed.M. degree.

The major goals of the program are to provide students with a thorough understanding of:

  • language analysis, including the analysis of the phonology, morphology, and syntax of the target language as well as the comparison of similarities and differences between English and the target language;
  • language analysis involving the analysis of the phonology, morphology, and syntax of American English as well as the comparison of similarities and differences between English and other languages;
  • the process of second language acquisition as it concerns foreign language learning and the learning of ESL in a classroom context and as it varies by age levels;
  • language assessment and test development procedures as they apply to foreign language and ESL learning;
  • the target culture and the principal ways in which it resembles and differs from that of the United States;
  • the social nature of language and its relevance to education;
  • American culture and the principal ways in which it resembles and differs from that of other societies;
  • strategies of teaching the target language activities; creating situations that cause students to use the language; creating learning situations that bring the reality of the culture closer to the student; and devising activities that develop students’ knowledge of the structure of the target language; and
  • techniques of teaching ESL in a classroom setting, specifically those intended to foster student interactions through language activities, based on culturally meaningful situations, which stimulate the acquisition of linguistic and sociocultural skills characteristics in American society.

Admissions

Applications can be completed online or obtained from the Office of Graduate and Professional Admissions, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, 56 College Avenue, New Brunswick, NJ 08901 (848-932-7711). Applications must be filed with the graduate admissions office no later than February 1 for the fall term. Students are admitted only once a year to the postbaccalaureate program.

Program Requirements

In order to earn the master's degree, individuals must successfully complete the required course sequence, provide proof of satisfaction of the general education requirements and liberal arts credits, and pass the portfolio and comprehensive examination.

Accepted students will have 5 years to complete the program, from the beginning of any course work to be counted toward the program.
