Description

The non-degree program in the Teaching of Writing is designed to enable teachers to utilize research and theory to foster a vision of literacy learning as an active social process in which students become engaged writers. Participants complete Rutgers University graduate courses and professional development hours associated with writing instruction. More specifically, this program requires twelve graduate credits earned from Rutgers University courses – on and/or off campus – that address the teaching of writing. In addition, participants complete a portfolio and at least 20 professional development hours from the National Writing Project at Rutgers workshops. Professional development hours that fulfill requirements include a variety of workshops offered on or off-campus.

To be an eligible candidate, an individual must be a standard certified teacher and preferably have five years of teaching experience. Individuals who do not have a master’s degree are eligible for the certificate, however are encouraged to apply to the Rutgers Ed.M. program in Literacy Education with an emphasis in Writing. The program is open to both literacy education students and reading specialist candidates.

Admissions

All applicants who are not currently in a Graduate/Non-degree program and don’t have an active RU ID # will need to complete a Graduate Study application. Applications can be completed online or obtained from the Office of Graduate and Professional Admissions, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, 56 College Avenue, New Brunswick, NJ 08901 (848-932-7711).

Applicants are responsible for reviewing and confirming that they meet program requirements before the application is submitted. Rutgers Graduate School of Education WILL NOT refund the application fee if an applicant is not accepted. Applications are due two weeks before the beginning of the next semester. Students are admitted throughout the year for this non-degree program.

Program Requirements

Applicants will be required to provide the following:

  • A photocopy of a New Jersey Standard Instructional Certificate or its out-of-state equivalent.
  • Official academic transcripts. Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university. Applicants are not usually admitted with a GPA of less than 2.75 in their most recent degree.
  • A letter of recommendation from the applicant’s current or previous school principal or supervisor, on school district letterhead, certifying the completion of five years of successful, full-time teaching under the appropriate certificate.

Accepted students will have 5 years to complete the program, from the beginning of any course work to be counted toward the program.
