This program allows a student to take coursework that leads to New Jersey Department of Education certification as a principal within an elementary or secondary school setting. The program is not aligned to any specific degree program, does not lead to a degree of any kind, and is usually completed at the New Brunswick campus with some online classes available.


All applicants who are not currently in a Graduate/Non-degree program and don’t have an active RU ID # will need to complete a Graduate Study application. Applications can be completed online. Applications are due by February 1 for fall admission and by November 1 for spring admission.

Applicants are responsible for reviewing and confirming that they meet program requirements before the application is submitted. Rutgers Graduate School of Education WILL NOT refund the application fee if an applicant is not accepted. Applications are due two weeks before the beginning of the next semester. Students are admitted throughout the year for this non-degree program.


Program Accreditation

The Rutgers University Leadership in Educational Administration and Supervision Program is nationally certified by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). Program Requirements

Applicants will be required to provide the following:

  • A photocopy of a New Jersey Standard Instructional Certificate or Educational Services Certificate or its out-of-state equivalent.
  • Official academic transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate studies. Applicants must hold a master’s degree or higher degree equivalent in the areas of educational leadership, in curriculum and instruction, or in one of the recognized fields of leadership or management; from a regionally accredited college or university. Applicants are not usually admitted with a GPA of less than 3.25 in their most recent degree.
  • A letter of recommendation from the applicant’s current or previous school principal or superintendent, on school district letterhead, certifying the completion of five years of successful, full-time employment under the appropriate certificate.

Accepted students will have 5 years to complete the program, from the beginning of any course work to be counted toward the program.

Additional Requirements for New Jersey Certification

To be certified as a principal in New Jersey, graduates of the GSE's non-degree principal endorsement program in educational administration must also:

  1. Complete state mandated administrative training in the prevention of harassment, intimidation, and bullying (HIB). Details on the required training can be downloaded here.
