Research Inititatives
Sociolinguistics, Spanish in the US, Bilingualism, Spanish Pragmatics, Teaching English Language Learners, Second Language Acquisition, and Changing perspectives in the teaching of Spanish in the U.S.
My line of inquiry explores two interrelated avenues in the field of sociolinguistics: The use of Spanish in society and Spanish language education. I prepare pre- and in-service language teachers and future linguists to understand how languages are used by individuals and a speech community and, how language use should guide their practices and research. In addition to investigating language variation and change in Spanish, I also investigate pragmatic variation in the use of several Spanish features.
Two new international research initiatives:
1. English/Spanish code switching in Argentinean written discourse.
2. Noticing Discourse: The effects of service learning in a short-term international service learning program on pre-service Spanish teachers.
Latest international venture: Argentina Study Tour 2011, a project I initiated with La Universidad del Centro Latinoamericano (UCEL) in Rosario, Argentina. Graduate School of Education students provided service learning in an elementary school, were hosted by local families, toured cultural icons, and participated in seminars related to Language, Culture, and Education in Argentina.
