Ed.M. Certification Program in Social Studies Education

The joint masters degree/teacher certification program in social studies education is designed for individuals who possess a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher education in a field related to social studies instruction in schools and who do not already possess a New Jersey teaching certificate. Teaching certificates are recommended only in conjunction with completion of requirements for the Ed.M. degree.

The goals of the program are to:

  1. Develop your critical examination of a variety of approaches to social studies teaching and curriculum;
  2. Give you practice using these approaches and considering the results;
  3. Provide you with opportunities to examine major disputes in social studies education and the relation of social studies education to societal issues; and
  4. Familiarize you with schools and schooling in theory and practice.
