Degree Requirements

General Education:

  • General Education: Prior to beginning or completing the program, students must have taken, at either the graduate or undergraduate level, coursework in these six areas:
    1. Arts (music theory, art history or appreciation, theater appreciation)
    2. Humanities (languages, linguistics, religion, literature, philosophy, classics, history)
    3. Mathematics (math, statistics)
    4. Science (life, earth and space, physical, or environmental)
    5. Technology (computer science or a technology-based course in a discipline)
    6. Social Science (psychology, sociology, anthropology, economics, political science, history)
  • Major: Before teacher certification can be recommended, the student must have completed at least 30 credits in a major in a liberal arts field, 12 of which must be at the 300 or 400 level.

Liberal Arts:

The total number of credits in coursework in Liberal Arts, including the major, must be at least 90. Neither Education courses, nor any other vocationally-oriented coursework (accounting, engineering, etc.) may be counted toward the 90 liberal arts credits; no School 05 or School 15 courses may be included.

Notes:
  • GThis course has an undergraduate number. Be sure to register for it for graduate (G) credit.
  • *This course requires a field experience component in an ESL classroom when not taken concurrently with 05:300:431 or 05:300:432.
  • **This course has a field experience component.
  • ***One semester of supervised full-time teaching in the classroom of a cooperating teacher.
  • Any coursework that needs to be taken in order to meet the general education or liberal arts requirements (listed above) will add to the 45 credits specified here.
  • Courses listed in the Suggested Sequence of Courses for First Fall, First Spring, and Summer may be taken on a part-time basis and do not have to be taken in the exact order listed, although that order is recommended. However, all courses scheduled for those three semesters must be completed prior to the Teaching Internship semester. The courses listed for Second Spring may be taken only after the Internship.

Portfolio:

Students must compile a portfolio of their best work to be submitted and evaluated at the end of the program.  The contents of this portfolio are specified in the Student Policy and Procedures Handbook.  (This requirement applies to students admitted March 2007 and after.)

Physiology, Hygiene, and Substance Abuse Issues:

During the Internship semester, students must either attend a series of seminars addressing issues of human physiology, hygiene, and substance abuse or must pass the official New Jersey Department of Education examination on these topics.

OPI & WPT:

All students seeking certification in ESL are required to pass an Oral Proficiency Interview and a Written Proficiency Test in English administered by ACTFL. The interview can be taken by phone. To arrange an interview, email testing@languagetesting.com or find www.languagetesting.com on the Internet. You should schedule your interview early in your first semester so that you have some time for remediation if necessary.  Call (914) 963-7110 to schedule the WPT.

Second/Foreign Language or Cultural Experience Requirement:

All students must provide evidence of a second/foreign language or cultural experience such as:

  • Experience living in a second cultural setting
  • Completion of one or more foreign language courses (minimum 3 credits)
  • Acquisition of a second/foreign language (in a non-traditional setting)

Comprehensive Examination:

Successful completionof a written comprehensive examination is required.  The exam can be taken only if 15:253:520, 15:253:523, and 16:300:535 have already been completed and grades are recorded.
