Language Education
About the Program Area Degrees, Certifications & Endorsements

Programs in language education prepare teachers in the areas of English as a Second Language, bilingual/bicultural education, and foreign language education. The curriculum is intended to provide a theoretical understanding of the structure of language and its social function, the process of language acquisition, and the relationship between language and beliefs, values, and culture. The core courses build these understandings and provide the opportunity for students to work with all three faculty members. The culminating experience of the graduate programs is a comprehensive or qualifying exam that requires the ability not only to master challenging theoretical material, but also to discuss the implications of the theories for classroom practice.

Students in the graduate programs in language education have the option of obtaining an initial teaching certificate in ESL or foreign language education. The program area also offers "endorsement" programs in ESL and bilingual-bicultural education for non-matriculated students who hold an initial certificate in other fields. An important component of many of these courses is the examination of the larger political, social, and cultural context of education in order to prepare future teachers and administrators to assume an advocacy role for students.
