The 2008-2009 academic year was one of significant activity and accomplishment for the Rutgers University Graduate School of Education (GSE). The work of our faculty, staff, and students once again resulted in GSE being ranked by US News & World Report as one of America’s best graduate schools of education. Many of our faculty and staff members and our current and former students were recognized for their accomplishments. For example, Associate Dean Grundy received the “40 Under Forty” Achievement Award from the Network Journal. Associate Dean Firestone was elected Vice-President of AERA’s Division L. Professors de la Torre, Lugg, and Morrow were recognized for scholarly excellence in their respective fields. Professors Curran and Weber received awards from Rutgers. Former Ph.D. student, Dr. Lei Liu won the 2009 NARST dissertation award. Former Ed.D. student, Dr. Barbara Trueger was selected as Educator of the Year by the NJ Association for Gifted Children. Current Ed.D. student Jennifer V. Jones received a Graduate Merit Award from the Executive Women of NJ. Current Ph.D. student, Shelly Witham was named as 2009’s Outstanding Earth Science Teacher for NJ by NAGT/ES. Three students, Crystal Chen, Kimberly Dickstein, and Hannah Greenspan received the NJ DOE Commissioner’s Distinguished Student Teacher Award.

Our faculty and students conduct research in several critical areas including: early education; educational equity and social justice; literacy development; and mathematical and scientific learning, reasoning, and teaching. Along with our partners, we are home to the Regional Educational Laboratory for the Mid-Atlantic region. GSE’s Center for Effective School Practices, the Rutgers Institute for Improving Student Achievement, and the Davis Institute for Learning serve to connect GSE with professional educators throughout New Jersey. Our National Institute for Early Education Research conducts world-class, cutting edge research that helps to shape early childhood education policy across the nation.

Rutgers GSE continues to produce outstanding scholars, educational leaders, teachers, and counselors. Working with our talented student body and helping them to achieve their professional goals is another important way that our School helps to enhance educational practice in New Jersey and beyond. We are very proud of our graduates and appreciate the positive response they have received in schools, universities, and other professional settings throughout our State and Nation.
